Esters

Esters are natural acids found in wine that are created during the process of fermentation and give the fruity and floral aromas that make it so enjoyable. More than 200 esters can be found in wine, creating aromas that range from the apple hints typical of a Chardonnay to the raspberry notes in Grenache.  The most common esters in young wines include citrus, berries, pear, and white flower. With time, these volatile compounds continue to interact with the alcohol, developing into aromas of leather, earth, or tobacco among others. 

Being able to identify these aromas takes time and practice.  We recommend you start with very aromatic young wines like Castello Banfi “La Pettegola” Vermentino, Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, or Elouan Pinot Noir from Oregon.  Grab these bottles, a couple of friends to share with, and have fun!
