Russian River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a renowned wine region in Sonoma County, California, established in 1983. Home to more than 70 wineries, it is best known for cool climate grapes, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its climate is shaped by warm days cooled by Pacific Ocean fog, which can lower temperatures by as much as 40°F. This cooling effect slows grape ripening, preserves acidity, and encourages the development of complex flavors. Pinot Noir typically displays bright acidity, soft tannins, and vibrant red fruit flavors. Chardonnay styles can range from fresh, citrus-driven styles to rich, creamy wines with tropical fruit aromas. Smaller plantings of old-vine Zinfandel, Merlot, and Syrah add to the region’s diversity.
