Vinho Verde, the largest denomination of origin in Portugal, is the northwest corner of the country along the Minho and Lima rivers. The area experiences cool temperatures with ample rainfall and intense influence from the Atlantic Ocean, creating a green and luscious growing environment.  The name, “green wine” in Portuguese, refers to the fresh character of the wines rather than their color. The region produces mostly whites from Alvarinho, Arinto, Loureiro and Trajadura, and some reds and rosés using native grapes like Borracal, Brancelho and Espadeiro. The white wines are known for their piercing acidity, low alcohol content, and slight effervescence, showcasing aromas of lime zest, pink grapefruit and white flowers.  However, Vinho Verde is experiencing a revolution, with young winemakers opting for wines that are rich, bone dry, and concentrated in flavor.
