Pugnitello

In the early 1980’s, Italian researchers and viticulturist embarked on a mission to re-discover ancient native Tuscan grape varieties that had been planted by the Romans in ancient times.  One of these grapes was Pugnitello, named after the Italian word for fist, “pungo”, in reference to the shape of its bunches. This black grape produces wines that are deep purple in color with aromas of berry compote, tobacco, red flowers, and a complex structure suitable for extended ageing in the bottle. 

The University of Florence has been collaborating with Tuscan winery San Felice since the beginning of this project, releasing the first bottle of 100% Pugnitello in 2006, made from San Felice’s experimental vineyard. This wine is aged in French barriques for 18 months and expresses aromas and flavors of dark fruits, cinnamon, star anise, wrapped around a full body and bright acidity.

Enjoy Pugnitello with a classic osso bucco or pasta with a hearty meat ragout. It might just become your new favorite Italian red wine.  Cheers!
