Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is located in east-central Italy, between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. It enjoys a dry, sunny Mediterranean climate, moderated by cool breezes descending from the mountains and ocean currents that chill the vines. The wines must be made with a minimum of 85% Montepulciano grapes, the second most planted red grape variety in Italy, after Sangiovese. This ancient variety produces medium-to-full-bodied wines with refreshing acidity and aromas of red plums, oregano, and sweet spices. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a very versatile wine that pairs well with traditional Italian dishes such as pasta Bolognese or sausage pizza.
