Paraje de Altamira is a Geographical Indication (GI) located south of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina, at the foot of the Andes Mountains. Its unique stony soil, where rocks can reach more than 6 feet in diameter, has a high calcium carbonate content, which gives the wines part of their structure and complexity. At an altitude of more than 3,000 feet above sea level, its climate is continental with cold winters and summers that are very warm during the day and cool at night, where the grapes ripen slowly, developing intense aromas and bright acidity. Paraje de Altamira was designated a Geographical Indication in 2013, recognizing the unique characteristics and potential of this small area to produce high-end Malbec. It is there that Altos Las Hormigas winery produces the Appellation wine from its 100% organic Jardin de Hormigas single vineyard.
