To Kalon

To Kalon, Greek for “highest beauty”, is the name of a 500 acre vineyard located in the Oakville area of the Napa Valley. Partially planted in 1868 by H.W. Crabb, it is regarded as one of the best sites in the world, dedicated mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon. Its gravelly soil allows the vines to develop a deep root system in search of nutrients and water, while the region’s warm days and cool nights permit the grapes to develop intense flavor components.

Nowadays, most of To Kalon is owned by Robert Mondavi Winery. The oldest block of the vineyard, known as I-Block, was planted with Sauvignon Blanc in 1945, and still produces the grapes used for the Fumé Blanc Reserve. Impressive for white grape vines that are almost turning 80 years old! To Kalon Vineyard Company also produces outstanding red wines from this site, including Eliza’s and Highest Beauty.
