Toro Designation of Origin (DO) is located in the far west of Castile and León, Spain. Historically, its wines enjoyed great prestige among royalty; it is even said that they accompanied Christopher Columbus on his voyages to America. Its sandy soils protected many vineyards from phylloxera, which is why ungrafted vines still exist, something uncommon and highly valued. The main variety is Tinta de Toro, a local adaptation of Tempranillo that produces intense, structured wines with great aging potential. Garnacha Tinta and white grapes such as Verdejo, Malvasía Castellana, Moscatel, and Albillo Real are also cultivated, producing red, rosé, and white wines, although the region is especially famous for its powerful reds.
